Salt Lake City

As the capitol of Utah and county seat for Salt Lake County, Salt Lake City has become the largest and constant cities of grown in the state.  The city is located in the Salt Lake Valley at the foot of the Wasatch Front Mountain ragne.  The city’s elevation is 4,330 feet/1,320 meters above sea level. The name of the city is often shortened to Salt Lake, or its initials-S.L.C.

Founded in 1847 by the Mormon pioneers, Salt Lake City is currently the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the mormon church.  This is notable when talking about Utah Real Estate and Salt Lake Real Estate because the city’s founder and states first governor, Brigham Young, laid out the city from the beginning as a “grid” system with the LDS temple at 0,0.

Construction of the first transcontinental railroad and mining initially brought economic growth, and the city became nicknamed the “Crossroads of the West.” In the 21st century the city has developed a strong outdoor recreation industry and served as host to the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Salt Lake City has many informal neighborhoods. Interstate 15, which runs along a north-south line, divides the city into eastern and western sections. The eastern portion of the city has higher property values than its western counterpart. This is a result of the railroad being built in the western half as well as scenic views from inclined grounds in the eastern portion. Housing is more affordable on the west side, which results in demographic differences.

Historically, the west side Salt Lake City has been a working-class neighborhood, but recently the more affordable nature of the area has enticed many professionals into the neighborhood. The small and increasingly trendy Marmalade District on the city’s west side, for example, was once considered seedy but is now considered eclectic and a desirable location.
