Murray Real Estate History
Murray has always been popular among Utah real estate buyers, with a location right in the center of Salt Lake County Murray is a desirable place to live, work and play!
Mormon Pioneers came to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 and by the fall of 1848 a scattered settlement was beginning to develop along the south end of the valley. The area remained largely agricultural until 1869 when ore was found in Park City and additional ore was found in Little Cottonwood canyon. Because of its central location and easy access to the railroad, the first smelter was built in Murray in 1870 and Murray became the home of some of the largest smelters in the region over the next 30 years.
The city was officially recognized and incorporated by the state of Utah on January 3, 1903 after a riot and fire started by a rowdy group of smelter workers led to an intense campaign for the city to be incorporated.
The city received its present name from the post office, which officially changed its name from South Cottonwood Post Office to Murray Post Office in 1883 after the territorial governor and cival war general, Eli Murray.
Because of Murray’s central location it later became a major retail hub. Bringing many industry jobs to the area. The development of Cottonwood Hospital in the 60′s, Fashion Place Mall in the 70′s and the addition of three TRAX (light-rail) stations in the city in the 90s, Murray is a desirable location for individuals and businesses.
