Sandy History
Sandy offers residents a convenient location, a family oriented community and a plethora of cultural opportunities. With I-15 running down the western side of the city and three trax stations, Sandy is a commuters dream. It offers easy access both to downtown Salt Lake City and to both Big and Little Cottonwood canyons, providing lots of recreational activities like skiing, rock climbing and more!
Mormon Pioneers came to the Sandy area in the 1860s. Back then it was just a farming community with few people and widely spaced homes. Then when mining began in the nearby canyons and the railroad was built in the area in 1877, Sandy changed from being a small quiet village to a booming mining town. Sandy was even named for the red-headed train engineer called “Sandy” Kinghorn. Sandy was incorporated as a city in 1893 with a population just over 1000 people. Today Sandy has grown to become a large suburban community with a steady population of nearly 100,000 citizens!
