South Salt Lake Real Estate History
South Salt Lake’s history closely resembles that of Salt Lake City‘s. Brigham Young brought a group of settlers through Emigration Canyon in to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. In the area’s infancy South Salt Lake was made up of three unincorporated areas: Millcreek to the north, Central Park (area between 300 East and State Street and 2700 to 3000 South) and Southgate to the south. In 1936 Central Park incorporated as its own town.
The history of how South Salt Lake became incorporated to a city is a bit more interesting. In the late 1930s the area was in desperate need of a sanitation system since most residents were using septic tanks or cesspools which then drained in to local creeks. Salt Lake City agreed to annex the area to address the problem, but gave no specific date to give them a sewer system. In 1936 a group of area businessmen formed the “South Salt Lake Businessmen’s Association” to help address the problem and put the issue of incorporation to a vote. Despite strong opposition the vote passed on September 28, 1938. The sewer was built using mostly pick axes and shovels and cost over $460,000.
