The area was first settled in 1853 by Peter Maughan, who made Wellsville the first European settlement in all of Cache county. The county actually gets its name from the stashes of fur made here by trappers from the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. In 1855, Mormon settlers camped in the county at Haw Bush Spring (later Elkhorn Ranch), although they found the winter too harsh and drove their cattle back to Salt Lake Valley. By 1859, more settlers began to arrive in the area and five more towns were eventually settled. These towns included Providence, Mendon, Richmon, Smithfield and Logan, which is now the county seat.

By 1888, Utah State University was founded in Logan, which has now become the largest employer in the county and made Cache county real estate more popular than ever. Today, more than 12,000 people attend USU.
