Garfield County Real Estate

Garfield County is located in southern Utah and has a population just over 5,000. Founded in 1882, the largest city and county seat is Panguitch. Garfield County is known for its pristine national protected areas, which cover a significant portion of the county.

    Garfield County Real Estate History

Garfield County was named after President Garfield, who was assassinated during the time Garfield County was founded. The first white settlers to the area came through here in 1864, although they left when war broke out. It wasn’t until 1871 that Panguitch was resettled, with more towns to follow. Interestingly, the small town of Boulder in Garfield County was the last U.S. town to receive mail via mule, which lasted until 1940.

Today, the economy here centers around the cattle and lumber industry, as well as tourism to the county’s many national parks and protected areas. The county also has large deposits of oil, coal and uranium, although they have not yet been developed.
