Sanpete County has a population of over 30,000 and takes its name from Sanitch, a Ute Indian chief. The county seat is Manti although the largest city in the area is Ephraim.

    Sanpete County Real Estate History

Sanpete was originally inhabited by the Fremont people and evidence of their agriculture is still visible in the form of mounds. The county was also a winter base for the Ute Indian chief Wakara, who adopted horses and plains culture and eventually enslaved the local San Pitch Indians, who used the area for hunting.

Wakara invited settlements from Mormons in the 1800’s, although went to war with them in 1853 and caused many of the settlements to be abandoned. The later Black Hawk War brought further problems to the settlers of Sanpete County. The first of the Mormon settlers arrived here in 1849 and settled Manti, which peaked in population over 100 years ago and declined until the 70’s.

Today, much of the economy is still centered in agriculture and raising turkeys. Snow College in Ephraim is also very important to the local economy of Sanpete County.
