Summit County Real Estate
Summit County Real Estate
Summit County is part of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area and gets its name because 39 of the highest peaks in Utah are located here. This mountainous region has become a popular upscale getaway and the largest and most well-known city is Park City, although the county seat is Coalville.
Summit County Real Estate History
The Ute and Northern Shoshone Indians used Summit County for hundreds of years to hunt and fish although fur trappers began coming here in the 1820’s. It wasn’t until 1848 that the area was truly settled when Mormon pioneers explored the Snyderville Basin and decided to settle down. Other settlers eventually moved to the area and began setting up towns in the county during the 1850’s. Treasure-seekers began to pour into the Park City area in 1869 when silver was discovered, causing the town’s population to swell tremendously. Mining remained an important part of the economy until the 1950’s, although so many people left the city by this point that it was considered a ghost town for some time.
While Park City was abandoned when mining disappeared, a single mine company opened a golf course, condos and a ski resort in the 1960’s. Since that time, Park City has grown to be one of the biggest ski destinations in the country.
