    Tooele County Real Estate History

The Goshute Indian tribe originally inhabited the land and the first white people to set up a permanent settlement were Mormon settlers in 1849. The settlement was originally named E.T. City after E.T. Benson, an LDS Leader, and the territory was initially called Tuilla, possibly a derivative of a Native American chief. Tension with the native Indians of the area plagued settlers for some time. General Connor eventually encouraged troops to start prospecting for minerals, believing it would bring more non-Mormon settlers into the area.

Mining remained an important part of the local economy well into the 20th century and two large military bases caused the population to grow tremendously.
