Wasatch County Real Estate

Founded in 1862, Wasatch County is part of the Salt Lake City-Ogden-Clearfield Combined Statistical Area and takes its name from an Ute Indian word for mountain pass. The largest city and county seat is Heber City.

Wasatch County Real Estate History

Before the 1850’s, Heber Valley in Wasatch County was a hunting ground for the Timpanogos Utes and the first white men to visit the area were members of the Dominguez-Escalante party in 1776. Fur trappers eventually started entering the area 50 years later. The first settlers arrived in 1859 and settled just north of present-day Heber City. Midway and Charleston were settled the same year. Wasatch County was created in 1862, which originally included the Unita Basin.

During the beginning of the 20th century, Heber City became a large shipping terminal for sheep and wool with the completion of the Rio Grande and Denver Railroad. When a spur was constructed from Park City to the mines in Keetley, lead, zinc and silver ore was also shipped out of the area.

Today, Wasatch County has a thriving tourist industry that contributes a great deal to the local real estate market.
