Wayne County Real Estate

Wayne County in southern Utah was formed from part of Piute County in 1892. The county takes its name from Wayne County in Tennessee and currently has a population over 2,500. The county seat and largest city is Loa.

Wayne County Real Estate History

Wayne County sits in the beautiful Colorado Plateau province and includes much of Capitol Reef and Canyonlands National Park today. In the past, the area was home to the Ute Indians and the county was formed in 1892. Most areas of Wayne County were first settled after 1880 because the area has limited resources and a very remote location and raising livestock was the most important industry for most of the county’s history. Stock was driven for over 100 miles north to Nephi until roads were build in the 30’s and the creation of the national forests here in the early part of the 20th century reduced the amount of cattle grazing in the county.

The area saw much of its development during the Great Depression when federal programs build roads, campgrounds, water projects and a courthouse in Loa. Today, modern highways have made it possible for tourists to enjoy the area and allow residents to access services in nearby Richfield.
