Moving to Mapleton: what to know

The basics for anyone relocating to Mapleton, with a source for each point.

  • Setting: Mapleton City's General Information page says the city is "located at the base of Maple Mountain with an extensive trail system and a commitment to preserving open space," with scenic hiking trails and campsites in Mapleton Canyon. The city motto is "Small town. Big heart." Mapleton sits between Hobble Creek and the Spanish Fork River; the first settlers came in 1850 and permanent settlers around 1870, the area was known as Union Bench until 1901, and the city incorporated in 1948. Census land area: 13.35 square miles (2020). (Mapleton City: General Information; History)
  • Growth: The Census counted 7,979 residents in 2010 and 11,365 in 2020, and estimates 16,275 for July 2025: up 43.3% from the 2020 estimates base of 11,360, while Utah grew 8.2%. (Census QuickFacts)
  • Households: 3,677 households averaging 3.55 people (Utah 2.97). 34.4% of residents are under 18 (Utah 26.1%) and 13.3% are 65 or older (Utah 13.0%); 85.3% lived in the same house a year earlier (Utah 86.0%). 53.9% of adults 25+ hold a bachelor's degree (Utah 37.7%), and 96.4% of households have broadband (Utah 93.4%). (Census QuickFacts)
  • Zoning and open space: The city's master plan "honors the community's rural character and agricultural history," and its zoning balances areas for large lots with designated areas for density and shared open spaces; preserving the foothills is a long-time priority. Check the zone and lot rules for a specific property (animals, accessory buildings) with Mapleton Community Development. (Mapleton City: General Information)
  • City utilities: One monthly city bill covers drinking water, sewer, streets and storm water, pressurized irrigation, garbage and optional fiber internet. New accounts file the Utility Service Application and pay a $150 deposit, waived with ACH direct pay. Bills arrive by the 1st and are due the 20th; XpressBillPay handles online and paperless billing. Electricity is Rocky Mountain Power (888-221-7070); gas is Enbridge Gas (formerly Dominion Energy). Utility office: 801-489-5655, Monday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Mapleton City: Utilities)
  • Two water systems: Drinking water is chlorinated and comes from four city wells (as of 2023) through over 110 miles of main; homes built before 1991 are asked to fill out the city's lead-pipe survey. Pressurized irrigation is untreated water from wells, rivers and runoff, available mid-April to mid-October through over 91 miles of main, and is not drinkable. Public Works: 801-489-6253 (after hours 801-489-9421). Mapleton Irrigation Company is a separate contact (801-491-6264). (Mapleton City: Pressurized Irrigation)
  • Sewer and streets: Sewer goes to the Spanish Fork treatment plant (a new plant is under construction) through about 85 miles of sewer main. Public Works maintains over 100 miles of public roads, including snow removal. (Mapleton City: Sewer)
  • Garbage: Republic Services picks up weekly on Monday, Tuesday or Friday depending on the area; cans out by 7 a.m. The Dry Creek Transfer Station (518 W 3450 N, Spanish Fork; Monday to Saturday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.), run by the South Utah Valley Solid Waste District, takes trash, household hazardous waste and recycling. (Mapleton City: Solid Waste (Garbage))
  • Mapleton Fiber: A city-run fiber optic utility whose goal is to connect every home. Rates as of 09/01/2025: 300 MB $79.00, 1 GB $89.00 and 2 GB $129.00 a month, free professional installation, managed Wi-Fi router $15.00. Availability varies by street. Office: (801) 806-9105. (Mapleton Fiber)
  • Police, fire and EMS: Mapleton has its own police department (305 N Main St; non-emergency 801-491-8048; dispatch and after hours 801-489-9421) and its own combined fire and EMS department in the same building. The city says ISO improved its fire rating from Class 5 to Class 3 in April 2019. (Mapleton City: Police Department)
