Convergence Point at The Point in Draper, Utah: What's Coming by 2029
Short answer: Convergence Point is an innovation campus now under construction at The Point in Draper, Utah, the former Utah State Prison site. It will be the permanent home of Utah's Nucleus Institute, with impact labs on housing, water and air, startup hubs, event space and student dorms. It is expected to open in 2029.
Construction has started at The Point in Draper, Utah. State leaders held a groundbreaking ceremony for Convergence Point on Oct. 1, 2026, according to Utah News Dispatch. The campus will be the permanent home of the Nucleus Institute, the organization the Utah Legislature created by reorganizing the Utah Innovation Lab. Gov. Spencer Cox called it the place "where a statewide idea really begins to take a physical shape." This post covers what is planned, what is at the site today, who is leading the project, the timeline, and what it could mean if you are buying, selling or investing near the Point of the Mountain. What Is The Point in Draper, Utah?
The Point is the name for the redevelopment of the former Utah State Prison site in Draper. The Nucleus Institute describes it as the transformation of roughly 600 acres of state-owned land into a mixed-use innovation community. The Point's first phase is a 104-acre downtown core, according to The Point's official site. The Nucleus Institute says that first phase is planned to bring together an innovation district with homes, workplaces, shops, open space, and connections to transit and regional trails.
Convergence Point is planned within that district. Utah News Dispatch calls it "a centerpiece for the project."
What Convergence Point Will Include
Convergence Point is designed as a meeting place for Utah's colleges, researchers, entrepreneurs, industry and government.
Impact labs for housing, water and air
Both Deseret News and Utah News Dispatch report that the campus will take on big statewide problems, including housing affordability, water and air issues.
"We will take groundbreaking research happening on campuses all over Utah and also across the world, and bring them together in this building to commercialize and turn them into impact," said Angela Smith, Nucleus Institute COO and Convergence Point program director, in Deseret News.
Entrepreneurship hubs
A large portion of the building will be dedicated to innovation and entrepreneurial hubs, according to Deseret News. Smith described them as "guided programmatic support for commercializing deep tech research." Proposed focus areas listed by the Nucleus Institute include artificial intelligence, energy, life sciences and quantum.
Classrooms, coworking and event space
Utah News Dispatch reports the center will offer classrooms, coworking spaces and offices for universities. Deseret News adds that the building will have a variety of event spaces. A news release cited by Utah News Dispatch describes research demonstrations, startup showcases, investor meetings, workforce programs and public events.
A higher education building with student dorms
Convergence Point will be an official Utah System of Higher Education building, and it will have dorms to house students from across the state, according to Deseret News.
What Is Already at The Point Today
Construction has started at The Point, but none of its new buildings are open yet. On June 29, 2026, The Point Partners, a private development team led by Lincoln Property Company, Colmena Group and Wadsworth Development Group, broke ground on The Point's first vertical development project, marking the start of visible progress on the 104-acre downtown district, the first chapter of a broader 600-acre vision (PR Newswire, June 29, 2026). Utah retains ownership of the land. Phase one is backed by a $165 million infrastructure investment from the Utah Legislature and a $2.3 billion private funding commitment from The Point Partners. Early plans include the Mountain America Event Center, Chroma (a 363-unit multifamily residential complex with 42,000 square feet of ground-floor retail), and The Promenade, a 2,000-foot walkable street. A fact sheet from The Point said the first buildings, public spaces and district anchors are anticipated to start opening in 2028, and KSL reports that phase one's buildout also includes Convergence Point, then called Convergence Hall (KSL, June 29, 2026). If you are planning around The Point, treat these dates as targets that can move.
Who Is Leading Convergence Point
- Nucleus Institute: Led by Jefferson Moss, commissioner of Utah's Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity and former Utah House majority leader, according to Utah News Dispatch. The Nucleus Institute's site lists Moss as CEO and says he is leading the development of Convergence Point.
- Angela Smith: Nucleus Institute COO and Convergence Point program director (Deseret News).
- The state: In 2023, the state of Utah approved $50 million in one-time state funding for the building, then called Convergence Hall, according to a Utah System of Higher Education presentation to the Legislature. HB 530, passed in the 2025 session, reorganized the Utah Innovation Lab into the Nucleus Institute. Deseret News reports the institute launched in August 2025.
- Higher education: When the center opens, the Utah System of Higher Education will help coordinate the Nucleus Institute's work, according to Utah News Dispatch.
- Design: Project renderings are credited to Gensler and FFKR Architects.
"Our goal and ambition here is to make Utah the fastest place in the country, hopefully the fastest place in the world, to be able to move ideas from discovery to impact," Moss said, as reported by Utah News Dispatch.

What This Means for Living Near The Point in Draper
Convergence Point is a long-term project, and nobody can promise what it will do to any home's value. Still, a few general points are worth thinking about if you live in or are watching Draper, south Salt Lake County and the Point of the Mountain corridor, including nearby Bluffdale and Lehi.
- Tech workers relocating: A campus built around startups, research and industry partners is the kind of place that can draw jobs and visitors over time. If you are moving for work on Silicon Slopes, being close to The Point may become one more factor when you compare commutes. Browse homes for sale across Utah to see what fits your budget.
- Buyers: The homes, shops and open space at The Point are still planned or under construction, not open. Buy for what the area offers today and treat future amenities as a possible bonus.
- Sellers: News of a major project nearby can bring more attention to an area, but buyer demand depends on many factors. Start with a free home value estimate and talk with an agent about how to present your home.
- Investors: Dorms, event space and startup hubs point to steady activity once the campus opens, but that is years away. Plan around today's rental demand.
- The construction years: Expect a long build-out. Construction traffic and changing roads are common near large projects, which matters if you commute through the area. For more on corridor commutes, see our post on the 2100 North freeway in Lehi.
